GST is 10% of GST-exclusive taxable amounts or one-eleventh of GST-inclusive ones. The tool rounds GST once on the invoice total, to the nearest cent, with half a cent rounding up. Line amounts also round to cents.

You choose each line's GST treatment. The tool does not decide whether a fee is taxable or whether you can charge it. It holds up to 20 lines.

Print or save PDF opens your print dialog with the displayed invoice. Download text file keeps your edits. Your entries stay in this browser.

The Agreed Service and Fee

An invoice records a fee your client has already agreed to pay. Enter each service as its own line with a description, quantity and unit price. The invoice generator multiplies the quantity by the unit price for each line amount, then adds the lines and any GST to reach the total. You can check every figure on the invoice by hand.

Describe the work so the client can match it to the fee agreement, such as "Loan structuring and lender submission" or "Refinance assessment". Enter one agreed fee as one line with a quantity of 1. Use a quantity above 1 only when the agreement prices a repeated service, such as hours of work.

In the starting example, one agreed broker service fee of $1,100.00 is entered including GST. The invoice shows $1,000.00 before GST, $100.00 GST and $1,100.00 payable.

The fee comes from your client agreement and the quote or disclosure you gave the client before the work. Complete those agreement and disclosure steps separately. Creating an invoice does not establish a right to charge the fee.

GST and Tax Invoice Details

The invoice generator labels the document a tax invoice when you are registered for GST and at least one line is a taxable sale. Otherwise it labels the document an invoice and adds no GST. A business that is not registered for GST issues an ordinary invoice, and business.gov.au's invoicing guide says that invoice must not use the words "tax invoice".

Under the ATO's tax invoice requirements, a tax invoice for a taxable sale shows these details:

  • that the document is intended to be a tax invoice
  • your name or business name
  • your ABN
  • the date it was issued
  • a brief description of each item sold, with the quantity and price
  • the GST amount payable
  • the extent to which each sale is taxable

A tax invoice of $1,000 or more must also show the buyer's identity or ABN, including a total of exactly $1,000. The invoice generator applies that check to the total payable including GST. It also flags an ABN that fails the check-digit test the Australian Business Register publishes.

GST is 10% of taxable lines entered without GST, or one-eleventh of taxable lines entered with GST. A line marked No GST adds to the total without GST, and the invoice shows each line's treatment beside it. With two taxable services at $100 each before GST and a $40 line with no GST, GST is $20.00 and the total payable is $260.00.

When an invoice has several taxable lines, the invoice generator applies the ATO's total invoice rule. It adds the taxable amounts, works out GST once and rounds to the nearest cent, with half a cent rounding up. Three lines of 5 cents before GST give 2 cents of GST, where rounding each line separately would give 3 cents.

You choose each line's GST treatment, because the tool cannot tell whether a fee is a taxable sale. For taxable sales above $82.50 including GST, provide a requested tax invoice within 28 days.

Numbering, Checking and Downloading

Enter your own invoice number in the format your records already use. To check it, paste the numbers you have already issued from your accounting software or spreadsheet. The invoice generator flags a match, ignoring letter case and spaces at either end. It can also suggest the next number after the highest number in your list, such as INV-0100 after INV-0099.

The check covers only the list you paste. It cannot see invoices in another system or ones a colleague created, so the number is unique only within that list. Your entries stay in this browser, and the page does not save them when you close it.

Each change to the form updates the preview, totals and missing-details list straight away. Editing the preview pauses its form updates. Copy, print and download use the displayed text. Discard your edits to rebuild the invoice from the form. While a detail is missing, the preview is marked as a draft. The draft mark disappears once every listed detail is complete.

Print or save PDF opens your browser's print dialog with only the invoice, so you can save it as a PDF and attach it to an email. Download text file saves the displayed invoice for your records. Business.gov.au says to keep most business records for at least 5 years.

You send the invoice yourself, and the client pays through the payment details you enter. Before you send it, check the account name, BSB and account number against your bank records. A wrong account number sends the client's payment to someone else's account.
