How to Delete ChatGPT History and Client Data

To delete ChatGPT history, open a chat’s options menu, choose Delete and confirm, or use Settings, Data controls, Delete all chats. Removing a chat from view starts a deletion process. Saved memories and separately stored files need their own clean-up.

Before deleting, confirm the account and workspace containing the client information. Deletion cannot be undone. If your brokerage needs evidence, follow its incident-record process and export any required record before removal.

Delete One Chat or Clear All History

Delete a single conversation from its history menu, or clear conversations in bulk through Data controls. OpenAI’s chat deletion instructions describe these controls.

Web and Desktop

  1. Open ChatGPT’s chat history in the account and workspace you want to clean up.
  2. Open the chat’s three-dot options menu.
  3. Select Delete.
  4. Confirm the deletion.

For all chats, open Settings, select Data controls and choose Delete all chats. Read the confirmation before continuing. The action can include project conversations.

In a desktop app, use its history and account settings to reach these controls. If the app does not show them, open the same account and workspace on the web. Uninstalling the app leaves account data in place. OpenAI confirms that macOS uploads are stored in the cloud.

iPhone, iPad and Android

  1. Open the ChatGPT app’s history using the menu icon.
  2. Press and hold the conversation title.
  3. Select Delete.
  4. Confirm if prompted.

To clear history, open the app’s account settings, then Data controls and Delete all chats. Use the web controls if the option is absent.

After deletion, refresh history and confirm the conversation has disappeared. If it remains, check that both devices use the same account and workspace. Archive only hides a conversation from the regular sidebar. Delete an archived conversation through the Archived chats controls in Data controls.

What Deletion Removes and What OpenAI Keeps

A deleted chat disappears from your account view immediately. OpenAI schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, with exceptions for information already de-identified and separated from your account, or retained for security or legal obligations. The chat and file retention policy explains those limits.

A missing sidebar entry proves removal from your view. It cannot prove that every retained copy has already been erased.

OpenAI’s update on the New York Times litigation says the earlier indefinite-retention order has ended. It also describes a limited historical set of consumer data still held for legal obligations. A legal hold can therefore override ordinary deletion timing for affected records.

Saved memories are stored separately from chats. Deleting a conversation does not automatically remove a saved memory. Uploaded files can also remain separately in Library or Space, or in a project or custom GPT. Remove the relevant saved copies as well.

Can my employer see my ChatGPT history?

Your employer’s access depends on the account and workspace. ChatGPT Business does not automatically expose everyone’s chats to teammates through the workspace interface. Usage analytics alone does not give access to private transcripts, according to OpenAI’s Business privacy guidance.

An organisation-managed account can have broader administrative access. OpenAI’s managed-account notice describes possible access to prompts, files and conversation history under the organisation’s configuration and applicable law. Sharing a conversation creates another access route.

Treat a work account as a brokerage record system. Temporary Chat or deleting your sidebar history does not override organisational retention or compliance access.

Use Temporary Chat for Client Work

Temporary Chat keeps a conversation out of history unless you save it. OpenAI does not use it to improve models while it remains temporary, but may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety.

  1. Open a new chat.
  2. Select Temporary.
  3. Choose Personalized or Unpersonalized if those options appear.
  4. Confirm the temporary mode before entering your message.

OpenAI’s Temporary Chat guidance says Unpersonalized excludes memory, custom instructions and plugins. Personalized can use existing personal context. Neither creates or updates memories while the conversation remains temporary.

You can save a temporary conversation as a regular chat. Once saved, ordinary account settings and saved-chat retention apply. An unsaved temporary conversation cannot be reopened from history after you leave it.

For brokers, temporary mode suits an approved one-off drafting task using an anonymised scenario. It does not make uploading an identifiable client file acceptable. Keep identifying details out unless your brokerage has authorised that use. Data passed to an external service through a GPT action follows that recipient’s policy and can outlast OpenAI’s temporary-chat period.

Clean Up After Pasting Client Details

Remove each place holding the client information, then record and assess the disclosure through your brokerage’s incident process. Preserve required incident evidence before removing the source.

  1. Delete the chat containing the details. Search for other conversations where you repeated or quoted them and remove those too.
  2. Open Settings, Personalization and Memory. Remove relevant saved memories or memory-summary information using the controls available to your account. Turning Memory off alone leaves existing chats in place.
  3. Remove uploaded copies from Library or Space. In Library, select the file and choose Delete or its trash icon. If Recently deleted appears, use Delete forever to remove the recoverable copy. Remove relevant project files or custom-GPT knowledge as well.
  4. Review any shared links and connected services involved. Remove shared access where available and stop further access that your brokerage has not authorised. Deleting the chat does not remove the original document from a connected service.
  5. Note the event in the brokerage’s approved records. Record what was disclosed, the account and workspace, who could access it and the containment actions. Use a file reference instead of pasting the sensitive material again.
  6. Escalate to the person responsible for privacy or compliance to decide whether this is a privacy incident requiring further action. Deletion alone does not settle that decision.

OpenAI’s memory removal instructions require removing both remembered information and its sources. Logs of deleted saved memories can remain for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.

Its Library guidance explains separate file deletion. Finish by reopening the relevant history, memory controls and file storage to confirm the client material is no longer available there. Record any item you cannot remove for the workspace owner to handle.

Export Before You Delete

Export ChatGPT data before deletion when your brokerage needs to retain a conversation. Store the export in an approved restricted location because it can include unrelated sensitive information.

For an eligible personal account:

  1. Sign in on the web and open your profile menu.
  2. Select Settings, then Data controls.
  3. Under Export data, select Export and confirm the request.
  4. Download the ZIP file from the message OpenAI sends when it is ready.
  5. Open the export and confirm that it contains the conversations you need before deleting them.

OpenAI’s data export instructions allow up to seven days for delivery. The download link expires after 24 hours. An export cannot recover a previously deleted chat.

On mobile, use Data controls and Export data. If the app offers Open ChatGPT on web, complete the request there using the same account. Business and Enterprise workspaces do not have the same member self-service export. The workspace owner handles organisation-managed access and any available member-export control.

If the link expires, request a new export. If the export option is missing, confirm whether you are in a managed workspace before treating it as an app fault.

Delete Your ChatGPT Account

Deleting your ChatGPT account removes access to OpenAI services through that account and requests deletion of the account’s data. Clearing chats leaves your account active. Account deletion is permanent, with a normal 30-day data-deletion period and legal exceptions.

For a personal account on the web:

  1. Open the account menu and select Settings.
  2. Select Account, then Delete beside Delete account.
  3. Enter the requested account identifier and type DELETE when prompted.
  4. Select Permanently delete my account.

On iOS, open account settings, Data controls and Delete account. On Android, open Settings, Data controls and Delete OpenAI account. Older Android versions can label it Delete Account. Follow the confirmation and ownership checks.

Use OpenAI’s account deletion guidance for the Privacy Portal route if sign-in fails. Cancel unwanted app-store subscriptions before deletion. Managed workspaces require your organisation’s help instead of personal self-service deletion.

Confirm that you receive the deletion confirmation. Completing a sign-in prompt or returning to the chat screen does not establish that deletion succeeded.

When a Staff Member Leaves

Removing a staff member from a workspace immediately revokes their access. It does not automatically erase their content. OpenAI’s workspace removal policy says Business retains removed members’ chats, files and canvas documents indefinitely, restoring access if they rejoin. Enterprise retention follows the workspace policy.

Projects and GPTs can transfer to an owner without transferring visibility of the departed member’s private conversations and files. Before removing a staff member, preserve required brokerage records through authorised controls and identify client material that still needs deletion. Confirm access is revoked and assign an owner to any remaining retention or clean-up work.
